Post Holiday Blues?

Apparently one of the most stressful times of your life.. "Moving House" which is what i have spent most of the summer doing. It didn't help breaking my foot as my usual routine to relieve any stress or tension is to run it out of my system. So the late booking of a trip to vancover to visit my brother in law was most welcome news!
Taking my own advice I switched off all emails and enjoyed 12 days of peace and quiet overlooking the mountains. I didn't realise just how relaxed I was until I we got back to Heathrow and we had to catch the tube home!
While I have since got back and approached my work with all my usual enthusiasm I havent felt the same sense of calm I did in Vancouver.
Is this holiday Blues? and what can i do to get it back? suggestions on a cheery sunny postcard please :)

A pain in the Back?

Recent studies conducted by Nuffield Health suggest that half of UK workers have suffered with back pain in the last year with 1 in 5 taking time off work as a result. Even more scary was to hear that of those that who did approach theirr G.P a third said they had failed to find a successful treatment or solution.
With those that did find a successful treatment mainly Physiotherapy provided a solution, some needed exercise and others needed surgery. Having been witness to this recently it makes me wonder sometimes ...Is primary care necessary when diagnosing back pain? Some of these people are suffering as their G.P can mis diagnose or offer pain killers which may mask the condition or aggravate it later if the right treatment isn't found.
But what is the alternative? I know I am immidiately confused with the difference of a Phphysiotherapist, Osteopath or Chiropractor. But research from health insurers suggest that many of these therapists are merely providing a weekly massage rather than a physical treatment plan. So who do you go to?

I think someone somewhere needs to find an intermediary solution and help get these people back to work!  I would love to hear your stories for a suggestion... contact me on

Is Private Healthcare only for Rich politicians?

With the run up to the London Mayor election there is a lot of dirt flinging between the political parties.
Ken Livingstone in particular has grabbed a few headlines for revealing that he uses private health insurance for annual check ups. Also for admitting that he enjoyed a glass of red wine to relax in the evenings.
This I assume gives many of us the impression he is a rich politician living a lifestyle that many of us can not afford. The luxury of Private Healthcare is only for the rich and elite and most surely goes hand in hand with wine drinking.
I wanted to take up this point as I really do not believe that private healthcare or medical insurance is that expensive for the value you get from it. In fact with the vast range of providers offering all types of cover to suit your needs and budget it is possible to obtain cover for the price of your daily cup of coffee! for this small sum you can have the peace of mind that should the need arise you have access to prompt treatment in a clean personal environment.
While we are lucky to have access to a fantastic NHS system the pressure on it to ensure everyone is treated quickly efficiently and with access to all the new drugs is quite simply impossible and unaffordable whichever political party we choose.
So well done Ken opting to go private for those screenings have made the queue shorter for some other people.

BEWARE the armchair can kill you!

Did anyone see the documentary by Horizon on BBC2? It was fascinating and i would recommend that you watch it on BBC Iplayer if you didn't catch it. Since watching it i have to say i have made a conscious effort to move around far more at my desk even getting up and offering to make the tea (unheard of ha!)

While the personal trainers and sports gurus among us have known the benefits of interval training I have only just started to test the theory but apparently if you step it up for just 3 minutes and then slow it down this could rapidly increase your fitness level. This compared to a 10k morning run definatly is worth a try!

I have had an influx of calls for health screening this week. It is scary when a fit and healthy player such as Fabrice Muamba  has a heart attack. Screening can pick up irregular heartbeats and it can often be resolved with medication.

If you want any help or advice on screening or preventative measures please call me today 0207 472 3350

How do you deal with stress?

Recent surveys suggest that Stress is the most common cause of long term sickness  absence for manual and non manual employees (CIPD survey).

With unemployment at an all time high, budget cuts, more public sector, private sector and non profit organisations report they will be making redundancies over the next six months. Its unsurprising that we are feeling the pressure and stress is on the rise.

With this in mind I returned to my positive thinking literature, I have found in the past it has lifted me and sometimes encourages me to take opportunities presented me that I wouldnt have considered before.

I was discussing this with my friends some who thought it was nonsense and others who have similar feeling to mine that it can be inspirational and help us to feel less stressed and more calm.

A friend reported that her employers have brought in a Life coach to encourage disengaged employees which makes me wonder if other employers do the same?

It must be difficult as we all deal with stress differently, I turn to books others may want to talk to a proffessional and some of us suffer in silence. We encourage all our employers to consider Employee Assistance Programmes for their employees as we need to keep the workforce we have happy and healthy in these times!

On that note back to my book "The Monk who sold his Ferrari" ..
